Snapchat Makes International Gains

Snapchat has surpassed Twitter in terms of daily active users in a large panel of Android devices across six key developed markets, including the U.S., U.K., Germany and France, by a substantial margin, according to new data. The same is true in the emerging markets of Brazil and United Arab Emirates.

Given the high mobile data costs of using the video-centric Snapchat, the service may not easily achieve global distribution the way Google and Facebook have. It costs five times as much money for consumers to buy one gigabyte of data in Brazil compared to the U.S., and nearly six times as much in India, according to Jana, a mobile app publisher, and the International Telecommunication Union. Those countries’ video advertising markets also are more nascent, making them less attractive to Snapchat.

In most of the markets where Snapchat was leading Twitter, more people had Twitter installed on their phones, suggesting that Snapchat has become a more important part of people’s daily lives.
