The End of Tech Startups

There’s no doubt we’ve been through an unprecedented startup boom over the past decade or so, for one obvious reason. Technologies like cloud computing, collaboration tools and distribution platforms (app stores, social media) have fundamentally driven down the cost of starting a company.

This is true across industries. It’s particularly true in tech, where one-time startups toppled incumbents by taking advantage of new technology, for e.g. Google making Yahoo irrelevant through search.

To all you aspiring tech entrepreneurs out there, it’s time to get creative if you want to take on a tech company. And if you don’t, there’s still plenty of opportunity going after non-tech incumbents in everything from media to education and health, which is probably why we’re seeing so many startups turn their attention outside of tech these days.
