Netflix to Increase European Production in 2019

Netflix is doubling down on Europe and plans to make 221 projects next year, including 153 originals, according to The Financial Times. Netflix’s push into Europe comes as other U.S. based companies are seeking to gain viewers outside of the United States, where the competition for eyeballs is fierce between the traditional media companies and over 200 streaming services.

The recent battle between Comcast and Fox for European pay TV operator Sky demonstrates how important Europe is becoming in the war for viewers. While Comcast has said it has no immediate plans to launch a global streaming service, it will be interesting to see how it starts to offer NBCU shows as well as Universal Pictures’ library to Sky customers to fend off the likes of Netflix.
