Amazon Drone Patent Could Pave Way for ‘Surveillance-as-a-Service’

Amazon has been granted a patent for tech that could allow its delivery drones to double as “surveillance-as-a-service” vehicles. The move, which could let its drones deliver packages to customers while also scanning their homes from above for signs of break-ins or fires, is another sign of Amazon’s interest in tech that augments home security and law enforcement.

One question is whether privacy concerns will scuttle this idea before it gets to the starting line. Amazon is already under the microscope for selling facial recognition software to law enforcement agencies and for partnering with dozens of police departments to share surveillance video from customers of its Ring camera-equipped doorbells.
