Binance pleaded guilty to violating U.S. money laundering laws in November 2023 and agreed to pay $4.3 billion in fines. Founder Changpeng Zhao also pleaded guilty to an illegal money laundering charge and stepped down as CEO. In April 2024, he was sentenced to four months in prison.
Binance has not established a corporate headquarters. Its employees work around the world.
Binance.US cut more than 200 employees, more than two-thirds of its workforce, by the end of 2023 amid legal and regulatory challenges.
Binance has bulked up its team with former government officials from countries including the U.K., U.S. and United Arab Emirates. Both Binance and Binance.US have also taken on former tech executives from firms such as Uber, Microsoft and Intel.
