Electric Vehicles in the Chip War

Feb. 2, 2023 - Though buyers desperately want them, an estimated 2.7 million new passenger vehicles will be undeliverable this year globally, including hundreds of thousands of electrics. The culprit is a continued chronic shortage of ordinary semiconductor chips, the thousand or so wafers that work the brakes, the cameras, the airbags, the seat heating and more. It’s the latest chapter in the seven-decade-long world created by the invention of silicon chips. Today, as the auto industry moves to EVs, there is much for battery manufacturers to learn from the history of chips.
